Font - r/AmItheAsshole Posted by u/throwawaygayhouse200 6 hours ago A AITA for not letting my cousing get married in the family summer house for free? Okay so I am looking for outside opinions here, I can preface with the idea that I don't think I am an asshole here. My partner however thinks it's a difficult situation and thought this would be a good idea, since she lurks here all the time and a lot of the responses are good. Also not native English speaker. So I am 28 year old woman, I am gay

Font - Sadly when covid hit my grandfather and my mother sadly passed away. Now this made my grandmother reach out to me, and I liked that. she wanted to make it up as much as she could. Sadly last year she passed away as well. She left token sums to all her children and grandchildren, but in compensation she also left me the summer house. I made it into an AirBnB, and I've been making -alot- of cash from it. Obviously this made the rest of my family furious because they could no longer visit du

Font - Straight-Singer-2912 - 6 hr. ago Asshole Enthusiast [5] NTA. You absolutely HAVE to have them put down a deposit (if something gets broken or damaged, they will accuse you of not being understanding of "family"). In the interest of compromise, if you want to let them use the house, tell them a few dates that the house is free, and charge them half so you don't feel screwed and they don't feel like they're like everybody else. And ALSO to set an important precedent that for any future fami

Font - SLMeros 5 hr. ago 2 Partassipant [3] Probably unpopular opinion but soft YTA. I get that technically you are not obligated. But that doesn't seem to be the nuance you are asking for here. I assume your cousin grew up spending wonderful summers at the cabin as well. And your aunt is probably telling the truth when she says her daughter has always wanted to get married there. For you this Cabin represents a cash cow but for them it is likely a connection to family that has passed and sweet

Font - Practical-Rooster691 6 hr. ago NTA. There is so much work that goes into preparing and maintaining an Airbnb on a day to day basis. Let alone a wedding! What a cheek! Asking for it for free. It's utterly disrespectful. I would never as this of my family let alone people I haven't met. Stand strong, you're totally in the right 432 Reply Share Report Save Follow

Font - Direct_Bunch_8031 5 hr. ago edited 5 hr. ago Asshole Enthusiast [6] ESH. Sure it is YOUR place. But I think your reasoning of 'wow i could make a lot of money from this one weekend' after taking a memorable place away from them is just not empathetic at all. I have a place in our family that we really used and love as we've grown up. I've dreamed of having my wedding there and if one of my distant cousins got it after spending little to no time there, used it as a cash cow so we couldnt g

Font - chuckinhoutex. 6 hr. ago Colo-rectal Surgeon [43] NTA- and all I would say to them is... This is not some empty house you are asking to use... this is the revenue that I would be losing. You guys have had my whole life to get to know me and THIS is when you reach out and demand something of me and give me insults? Ask yourself if you think I should feel persuaded by being attacked and rethink this whole thing and maybe try again. But don't too long, bookings are going fast! Reply Share Re

Font - joanholmes 5 hr. ago Partassipant [1] ΝΤΑ It would have been different if the family had also tried to make ammends when grandma reached out. You'd still be entitled to do whatever you want but at least then they'd have at least any ground to stand on. They're being absolutely ridiculous. If your grandmother had decided to sell the house instead of passing it down, would they be reaching out to that stranger to demand to use it for free? Because that's what you are to them, a stranger. He

Font - theregoesmymouth - 5 hr. ago Partassipant [2] Ugh, this is classic bait for people who think this reddit is 'am I legally correct' instead of 'am I the asshole'. I will absolutely be downvoted for this as a result. No you don't have to do this. Yes YTA for blocking your cousin from getting married in a place full of positive memories. She didn't kick your mum and you out, she didn't disown you or break family ties. Drop the chip on your shoulder. 119 Reply Share Report Save Follow

Font - alicat7777 5 hr. ago NTA. If you knew these people, I'd say sure. But you don't and once you start the freebies, it will never stop. Free weddings, weekend visits. It's sad for them but you have no relationship with them so it's pretty entitled for them to to try to TELL you, not even ask you that they want a wedding there. The freebie train is over but if they want, they can book it like everyone else. If they were nicer, maybe a discount but not like this. Reply Share Report Save Follow

Font - Dogs ReadingBooks · 6 hr. ago Commander in Cheeks [209] NTA. Of course it's sad for them that they're no longer able to use the house/spot, as they've grown accustomed to. But to tell you that they'll use it, and not ask/pay for it? Not a good move at all. ↑86 Reply Share Report Save Follow

Font - steppedinhairball - 5 hr. ago ΝΤΑ Here is my reasoning for my answer. While your mother was estranged from her family, did any of her brothers and sisters keep in touch or did they follow the edict of your grandfather? The point is they are strangers because they chose to be strangers. They have no right to the property as it is now owned by a stranger. Yes, you have some familial ties, but do to their choice, you are a stranger. It's used as a rental property and therefore of they want t
